education in South Korea

South Korea's education system is among the best in the world, as is its economy. According to them, their education system was the engine of development, which lifted the country after the war against North Korea. Although its students may be the most prepared, studies indicate that they are also the most unhappy, their suicide rate is the highest among rich countries, and the age group with the most suicides is adolescents.

A school day in South Korea lasts around 7 hours, but normally students go to study for several additional hours at night libraries and private academies. Most young people study from 8 in the morning until 11 at night and parents invest a fortune in the private education of their children.

In fact, the government legislated in this regard, establishing that schools had to close at 10 at night, however, due to pressure from the system, many students according to studying when they got home.

In recent years, the government has recognized the problem, taking steps to reduce the academic requirement. The Ministry of Education recognized in 2015 that the school pressure faced by young people has led to a social problem.

(As a curious fact, since education is one of the fundamental areas within Korean society, teachers are highly valued and celebrated, earn very high salaries and are as famous as a television or K-pop celebrity).

  2. Hi, Akun!
I am one of those who believe that learning must be entertaining and not something to suffer, so I find it very sad that South Korean students live all day studying and cannot enjoy other hobbies quietly.
    Greetings!
